EVENT YEAR OVERVIEW

Hurricane Iniki and the 1992 Central North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Season

1992 was one of the regions most active seasons, with a total of 11 tropical cyclones. Three of the systems became full blown hurricanes in or before entering the central north Pacific. Warmer than usual waters over the lower latitudes of the central Pacific as the 1991 El Nino carried into 1992 and beyond are at least partly to blame.

REGIONAL OVERVIEW

Tropical Cyclones in the Central North Pacific

The Central North Pacific region is defined here as the area bounded to the east by 140ºW longitude, to the west by the International Date Line, and to the south by the Equator. Between 1966 and 2006, this region has seen an average of 2.85 tropical storms or hurricanes either form within or enter its boundaries per year, between. An average of 0.75 hurricanes per years occur, or in other words, three hurricanes are recorded about every four years. Even rarer are major hurricanes – hurricanes with winds greater than 115 mph (100 kts), such as Hurricane Iniki – which are seen on average about once every two years.
