Back

Approximately 14,350 homes – more than half of all the homes on Kauai – were damaged. A total of 1,421 homes were destroyed and 5,152 incurred major damage. A vast majority of the island’s 70 hotels also suffered damage. In total, 7,200 hotel and condominium units were damaged. As a result of such damages, over 7,000 of Kauai’s 52,000 residents were left homeless and forced to find refuge. The American Red Cross distributed over 4,000 tents through November for homeowners who did not want to leave their properties. Additionally, 6,000 people were housed in shelters at 11 locations across Kauai in the aftermath of Iniki. In all, more than 1,700 Red Cross and local volunteers provided shelter to over 17,000 people at 46 shelters across the Hawaiian Islands through October 2. Over 230,000 meals were served during this period.

Hawaii State Civil Defense reported 2 deaths on Kauai directly attributable to Hurricane Iniki. An additional 1,066 people were injured on the island, 13 seriously.
