EVENT OVERVIEW

On September 5th Hurricane Iniki formed as a tropical depression over warm waters about 1600 miles southwest of Baja California. Intensifying, it crossed into the central Pacific on the morning of September 6th. On September 7th it was upgraded to Tropical Storm Iniki and on the 8th, when it was 470 miles southeast of Hilo, Hawai`I, it was upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane.
